Work Permits

If you are not an SUSD student, please go to your home district to apply for a work permit.

Where do I Obtain a Work Permit?

  • Beginning August 1, 2024, all work permits will be processed at the high school sites.
  • Students need to check in with the Counseling office to find the procedure for that site.

How to Obtain a Work Permit

  1. Students eligible for a work permit must have a 2.0 GPA and satisfactory attendance.  These will be confirmed by the school staff and student records.
  2. Students will print out the Form B1-1 Statement of Intent to Employ a Minor and Request for Work Permit-Certificate of Age or pick one up from their school office.
  3. Students will complete Minor’s Information and School Information.
  4. Parent or legal guardians must sign their portion of the form.
  5. Students must return completed Form B1-1 with all signatures.
  6. Typical processing time is 24-48 hours. Students will be contacted at the phone number listed on the application when the Work Permit is ready to be signed and picked up.
  7. Students will sign the permit in person with the school staff when they pick up their permit. Bring photo ID.
  8. Students then take the completed Permit to Employ and Work (Form B1-4) back to their employer.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

  • Work Permit Applications must be signed by the employer.
  • A parent or guardian must also sign the application.
  • The student’s social security number is required to process a work permit.
  • Work Permit paperwork may NOT be emailed or scanned.
  • Student ID and age will be verified through district records.
  • The completed “official” work permit is signed by the student and the approved administrator, so the student MUST BE PRESENT to pick it up.
  • Each new job site requires a new work permit.
  • All work permits expire after the new school year begins.

Need a Work Permit?

Students do not need a work permit to search for a job. A work permit is issued only after an employer has signed the Form B1-1, indicating their intent to hire the student.

Students who have received a job offer must submit a completed Form B1-1 Application, signed by the employer, in order to obtain a work permit.

All work permits expire at the start of each new school year in August. Students must renew their work permits annually.

To renew a work permit, students must submit a new Form B1-1 Application to the appropriate staff at the high school they attend.
