Preschool Assessment & Autism Center (PAAC)

The Preschool Assessment & Autism Center (PAAC) handles all Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) preschool special education referrals in one location. Children who are referred for special education are evaluated by trained professionals to learn about their strengths and needs.

Our Preschool Assessment Team may include:

  • School Psychologists
  • Speech and Language Pathologists
  • Special Education Teachers
  • School Nurses
  • Other qualified specialists

PAAC has 11 special education preschool classrooms for young children with autism. Every student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and services are provided based on each child's IEP goals.

At PAAC, we work hard to provide a safe, caring, and supportive learning environment. We use research-based teaching methods that are proven to help children with autism learn and grow. Students receive support in:

  • Academics
  • Communication skills
  • Sensory and motor skills
  • Social skills

Each classroom is led by a Special Education Preschool Teacher and supported by trained paraprofessionals. Families, students, and staff also receive support from:

  • An On- Site Administrator
  • Speech and Language Pathologists
  • An Autism Specialist/Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
  • An Inclusion Specialist
  • A Program Specialist

Student progress is carefully tracked through daily data collection. Children are placed in classrooms based on their individual needs. Parents are important members of the IEP team and are included in all decisions about their child's education. Our goal is to help every student make progress toward success in general education settings whenever appropriate.

Parent education is also an important part of PAAC. We offer monthly Parent Coffee meetings where families can learn about topics such as:

  • Communication skills
  • Positive behavior strategies
  • Inclusion
  • Self-help skills
  • Summer learning opportunities

Families can also attend trainings on Autism 101 and communication programs such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

Working Together for Student Success

At PAAC, we believe that when families and educators work together, children have the best opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. We are proud to support students with autism and their families every step of the way.
